ABOUT | Martin Otterbeck

Martin Otterbeck (født 1965) er en prisbelønnet frilans film- og tv-fotograf med base i Oslo og Lofoten.

Otterbeck har arbeidet som film- og tv-fotograf i over 25 år, og begynte sin karriere i 1996 etter å ha avsluttet studier på Oslo film- og TV-akademi.

Han har vært fotograf på en rekke store film og tv-produksjoner, og ble for sitt arbeid på Erik Poppes spillefilm «Utøya 22. juli» kåret til vinner av «European Cinematographer Prix Carlo Di Palma» European Film Awards i 2018. (Se juryens begrunnelse under). Han vant også Kanonprisen og Norsk Filmkritikerlags fagpris for samme film.

Otterbeck arbeidet også som fotograf på publikums- og kritikersuksessen «Kongens nei» (Regi: Erik Poppe), som vant fem Kanonpriser, åtte Amandapriser og var Norges kandidat til Oscar-prisene i 2016.

Otterbeck har også arbeidet på en rekke andre norske og skandinaviske spillefilmer, både som DP (director of photography), B-kamera-fotograf og håndholdt kameraoperatør (se liste)

Otterbeck har også bred erfaring innen forskjellige tv-sjangre, det være seg dokumentar-, underholdnings-, kultur-, reise- og livsstilsprogrammer – og flere reality- og dokusåpeproduksjoner, blant annet de fem første sesongene av TVNorges suksess «71 grader nord».

Han har laget flere dokumentarer vist i NRKs «Brennpunkt» og TV2s «Dokument 2», blant annet om Irak-krigen og Israel-Palestina konflikten. Han har også vært engasjert i Kulturavdelingen til NRK.

Flere av TV-produksjonene Otterbeck har bidratt til er blitt belønnet med Gullruten.

Han har spesialisert seg på et «håndholdt dokumentarisk billedspråk», han har fått mye oppmerksomhet for.

Otterbeck er medlem av Foreningen Norske Filmfotografer og European Film Academy.

Martin Otterbeck (born 1965) is a Norwegian freelance cinematographer based in Oslo and Lofoten, Norway. He has more than 25 years of experience and graduated from Oslo film – og tv-akademi in 1996.

Otterbeck have participated in numerous film- and tv-productions, both Norwegian and Scandinavian, and was awarded «European Cinematographer Prix Carlo Di Palma» at the European Film Awards in 2018 for his work on «Utøya 22. juli» (U – July 22). He has also won several other awards (including Kanonprisen and Film critic team professional Aaward ) for his work on this film.

In 2016 he worked on «Kongens nei» (The King’s Choice) – which was a huge success both at the box office- and with critics - and set a record for awards and nominations in Norway.

Otterbeck has broad experience in various tv-genres, spanning from traditional documentaries to travel, lifestyle and entertainment programs. In addition to this he has worked with several reality-concepts, most notably the wildlife adventure «71 grader nord» («71 Degrees North»/«No Boundaries»).

Over the years Otterbeck has specialized in a «hand held documentary imagery».

He is a member of The European Film Academy and Foreningen Norske Filmfotografer.

Martin Otterbeckʼs cinematography masterfully balances an aesthetic concern with the political meaning of the tragedy of Utøya. With very concentrated one-shot hand-held camera work, the cinematographer had to decide what to follow and what not to follow, thus creating an intense viewing experience as you find yourself on the island with the youngsters. Right-wing extremism is dangerously rising again: Cinema, in each of its parts, has the overwhelming responsibility to bring light into our dark times.
